Black History Month competition winners

The winners and runners-up of Bexley’s Black History Month school competition have been announced.  

The winners were –  

Secondary school – Sydney-Rose Samuelson, year 7, Harris Garrard Academy 

Primary school - Tanem Seyman, year 1, Birkbeck School 

The runners-up were –  

Secondary school – Temiloluwa Oyekan, year 7, St Catherine’s RC School for Girls 

Primary school – Zachary Mansaray, Reception, Willow Bank Primary School 

They will be featured in the Winter edition of the Bexley Magazine that will be delivered across the borough and shared on social media.

The judging panel, which included representatives from the members of Bexley’s Black and Asian Minority Ethnic community network Council’s Black and Asian Minority Ethnic staff group and Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Alex Sawyer, were impressed with the standard of the entries.  

Cllr Sawyer said: “I am delighted so many young people took the time to enter our Black History Month competition. There is so much talent out there and we had a really tough time deciding on our winners. In the end it came down to the impact that they had on us. The pictures were so full of colour and the meaning of the work was immediate. The poem was well thought out and succinct. I hope our Magazine readers enjoy them as much as we did.”  

Black History Month is chance to celebrate and promote black history, culture and heritage. It is also a chance to share information about the positive black contributions to British history. The competition asked for a story, a poem, a blog or a photo that shows what the month means to them.
